There was a great afternoon’s bowling on a much improved grass green for the 2024 Chairman’s Cup Competition. 10 pairs took part and these were split into two groups for a round robin. Each game was played over 7 ends.
In Group A Chris Webster & Kev Maher narrowly won the group with a +6 points difference, just narrowly ahead of Margaret Copeland & Peter Grimes who finished with +5 points.. Group B was even closer with Ian Gill & Laura Williams (who has only played a few times as part of our beginners sessions) and Matt Finch & John Davies drawing on +7 and also on the points scored (28) so Ian & Laura topped the group by virtue of the result between the two.
The Semi Finals were both close affairs. Marg & Peter overcame Ian & Laura 6-5, winning on the final bowl, Peter bowling a wonder bowl to carry the jack after Ian & Laura were lying game. The second semi was also close with Chris & Kev just overcoming Matt & John 8-6.
On to the final and a repeat of an earlier round robin game which Peter & Marg had taken 6-5. However, Chris’ leading was exemplary and, with 1 end to go Chris & Kev wrapped it up to take the 2024 Chairman’s Cup. Thanks to all those that entered and also came along to spectate and support.
Our next club competition is a pairs comp run by our Chairman, Steve James. It will be run as a handicap pairs comp with people choosing their pairs in advance. Handicaps to be decided on the day by the Chairman. Round robin leading to a final.
If you wish to take part please e-mail/text/WhatsApp Steve to notify him by the end of the month of your pair.
We had a strong turnout of 20 members on a glorious afternoon. A knockout took place with the losers going into a seperate plate competition.
In the main draw Mike Fagan beat John Leadbetter and Nigel Whitehurst beat Hannah Jones in the semi-finals. The final was closely contested but Mike pulled away to win 21-9.
In the plate Jacky Denning topped her group by 5 points from Dave Roper and Dave Hulse won his group by 6 points from Chris Webster. Jacky was triumphant in the final by 7-3.
It was a great afternoon helped by the weather. Thank you to everyone who took part and a special thank you to Dave Roper and Hannah Jones for their help in co-ordinating.

Thirteen bowlers came along for the annual Ken Knowles Memorial tournament yesterday. Plans to play a knockout format were jettisoned, given the relatively low numbers. A round-robin tournament was played with seven pairs, Kev Maher kindly played with four woods to make a ‘pair’.
The group stage was very competitive with most pairs winning and losing some games. However, Pauline Snelson and Hannah Jones won all six of their games to progress smoothly through to the final. Hannah led superbly throughout and Pauline was as consistently good as ever. Emma Denning and Dave Hulse made it to the final by winning their final group game on the last end and ended up with four wins.
The final turned out to be a one-sided affair with Dave and Emma establishing a 7-0 lead and never looking back. It was a shame that there had to be a loser, particularly as Pauline and Hannah had played so well in the group stage, but that’s sport isn’t it? Congratulations to Dave and Emma. They were worthy champions. This was Emma’s first club tournament trophy and, with bowling like that, it could be the first of many. Dave has won too many to remember and played two tremendous woods to wrap up the final!
A good afternoon was had by all, although the sunshine was in short supply. A few photos from the afternoon are posted. Thanks to all those who came along as we remembered our late club Treasurer Ken.
