More finalists

Dennis Mussell and Dave Roper also reached the latter stages of the Bleasdale Cup last night. It would be great to see members attend the Finals Night next Wednesday evening at Aughton Institute (from 6.30pm) to cheer on their teammates and to recognise the achievement of our teams and individuals at the Presentation event that will follow the Final. Trophies will be presented by the League President Marcus Bleasdale.

Winter Bowls Competitions

We will be running the same club winter bowls programme as last year consisting of Winter Singles Leagues and Winter Singles Ladder starting in October.

Winter Singles Leagues

Leagues have an average of 10-12 players.

Leagues aim to have players of similar standards

Everyone plays each other once

Everyone arranges the game and records the results through a WhatsApp group

3 points for a win, 1 point if you lose but score 15 or more

Games played between October and end of March

Winter Singles Ladder

Everyone who enters has their name and handicap score put on a clothes peg

Everyone on the ladder is in a WhatsApp group

Games arranged through WhatsApp

Players can basically play anyone else on the group. The winner moves their peg up three places

The rules on who players can challenge change in March

The top two players at the end of March play a deciding final for the trophy

(Full rules are in the clubhouse on the winter noticeboard)

There will also be a winter singles knockout and pairs knockout. More information will be circulated about how to enter these competitions in November.

Steve James and Dave Roper will administer all of the winter bowling competitions, leagues and ladders.

If you wish to join the leagues, ladder or both please e-mail ormskirkbowlingclub2013@gmail.com quoting which one/s you want to enter and your smartphone number. You will need to be agreeable to joining a WhatsApp group for communication.

We ask members to register their interest by the end of September please. It will be too late to enter the singles leagues after this date.

Good luck to all entrants and we hope you enjoy your Winter Bowling.

Eric Barklem

Eric Barklem

The Club is very sad to hear that Eric Barklem passed away peacefully yesterday morning. Our sincere condolences go to Angie and all the family.

Eric was a stalwart of the Club since the Halton Castle team moved over to join us. No job was too big or small for Eric. As well as being a prime mover in improving our grass green and being our green keeper until he fell ill, he also undertook a myriad of other jobs, from utilising his engineering expertise on repairing machinery to unblocking the toilets. Whenever you were at the Club you were sure to see Eric undertaking some task or other.

Eric was always encouraging to our new and junior bowlers, and also took an active part in the Club’s Committee. As well as spending so much time helping at our Club, he was involved with local bowling leagues – he was Secretary of the Ormskirk League and, until a couple of years ago, the Secretary of the Aughton League.

You will be much missed Eric, and you are a massive loss to the local bowling scene and to our club in particular. You leave behind so many friends and family in our Club.

Funeral arrangements will be posted once we have further details

Chairmans Cup

We had a good turnout of 36 members yesterday for the above competition. The weather was kind and a round robin tournament was played in two groups with the winners of each group progressing to the final.

In the first group the runners up by 4 points were Steve James and Graham Kilpatrick and the winners were Margaret Copeland and Ted Baker. The second group runners up by a large margin were Kevin Maher and Nigel Whitehurst with the runaway winners being Mike Fagan and Peter Grimes.

The final was closely contested but eventually Mike and Peter prevailed. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all who took part with a special mention to Ian Gill and our Chairman, Steve James, for organising and co-ordinating the event.
