And the winner is…Ormskirk Bowling Club

We have a very proud Chairman and he has written this piece setting out the Club’s successes over the last few weeks……
It has been a remarkable few weeks for OBC.  A number of our teams have had very successful league campaigns.  We finished runners up in Ormskirk Premier League with Ian Gill winning the league averages and a total of 6 of our players finishing in the top 20. Congratulations to Ian on his achievement of losing only one game out of 18 played. Ormskirk Castle secured promotion from Division 1 and are now back in the top league, where they belong, with 4 bowlers finishing in the top 20.
Ormskirk Castle also secured runners-up spot in Division 2 of the Aughton District League and also secured promotion, with Peter Bailey completing the perfect season with 12 unbeaten matches to win the averages. Congratulations to both Ormskirk Castle teams.
Dave Ball also led our Maghull League team to runner up spoilt in the 4th Division and secured promotion to the 3rd Division for next season (subject to possible league restructure.
However, the success has not ended there! On 11th September Ian Gill and Ian Mayne won the Ormskirk League pairs title. In the last 8 the Ians beat D. Stephenson and D. Scott in the quarter-finals and D. Knowles and D. Doyle in the semi-finals, winning both games to 11. These were impressive results but the best was yet to come with a 21 v 15 winner over Dave Fenney and Tim Hodge, two excellent  bowlers. It was a great result and all at OBC are very proud of their achievements.
However, the silverware trail didn’t end there! Two OBC pairings had played their way through to the Westhead League pairs finals night last Friday – Steve James and Chris Horsfall and Ian Mayne and Mike Fagan. Steve and Chris bowled very well in the quarters and semi and had single figures victories in both. Ian and Mike achieved a remarkable comeback in the quarter final being 18-3 down to Andy Slater and Lol Wells to run out 21-18 winners. Mike Fagan was instrumental in starting the comeback with some inspired leading. Mike and Ian then beat Don Morris and Tim Hodge in the semi to set up an all OBC final. Ian and Mike bowled very well, particularly on corner marks, to take the final to 13 and were worthy winners. Again, all at OBC are proud of the achievements of all four finalists and are delighted that members of our club now hold both of these pairs trophies.
Finally, good luck to all OBC members playing in the Ormskirk and Aughton League singles starting this Tuesday. Surely we couldn’t win that as well could we?
Thanks to everyone for their contributions on the greens this season. It has been our most successful campaign to date. Everyone has enjoyed their bowling and represented the club magnificently. Look out for an announcement shortly about our winter singles bowling ladder and the Chairmen’s cup. The bowling never stops at OBC, especially now we’ve got our lights!

Planning & Great Job Done

Our planning consent for the lighting and shelters etc has now been granted by the Council.  Thanks to Ken Knowles for his work on this.

One of our planning requirements was that we had to paint our container green and thanks to Ted Baker, John Leadbetter, and Ian & Matthew Gill (when he wasn’t having a ‘rest’) this was done tonight.  Thanks to all that helped.

National Champions

Congratulations  to Ian Mayne who was part of the victorious Lancashire team who won the Men’s National Triples today in the flat green game, beating Devon in the final.  This is a marvellous achievement when you consider how few flat greens and players there are in the County compared to many other counties.

When added to Dave ‘Flash’ Gordon reaching the last 64 of the Waterloo, it emphasises what talent we have within our Club.

Roy Ashcroft Memorial Trophy 2018

There was a very reasonable turn out of 20 bowlers on a glorious sunny day for this year’s Roy Ashcroft Memorial Trophy, and it was good to see some of our newer members coming along and giving it a try. We split into two groups of 5 pairs to play in a round robin and played in a new revolutionary format.  Each match was played over 8 ends but the twist was that 4 had to be played on one green and then the other 4 on the other green.

In Group A Les Farrell and Rylan Irwin were in fire wining all their games with a +25 points difference.  Ian and Hannah Jones came in second after managing 2 wins and a draw.  Group B also saw run away winners, with Steve Denning and Dean Simmonds winning all their matches and amassing a large +32 points difference.  Ian Gill and Dave Roper scrapped into the semis with 2 wins and a +17 points difference.

On to the semi finals and the hot favourites, Steve and Dean crashed out 13-2 to Ian & Hannah, with Hannah playing an amazing game on the carpet to seal it. The other semi final was a bit closer and it was neck and neck after the first 4 ends on the grass.  However Ian & Dave pulled away on the carpet to take it 8-4.

The final was therefore the battle of the group runners-up with the winners of each group having run out of steam in the semis.  The crowd seemed to be favouring Ian & Hannah, but it was Ian & Dave who proved to be the villians of the piece and they ran out 11-3 to lift the trophy.  it proved to be a great day though and the format seemed to work.
