Successful Working Party

Thanks to all those that turned up this morning to help out.  The spiking of the grass green was hard work, but was successfully completed.  All the gutters got cleared of leaves, part of the hedge got clipped back and the clubhouse had a bit of a clean.  All in all a very productive morning.

New Winter Ladder Leader

Slater

As we just move over into November, our Winter Bowling Ladder has a new leader.  After a rush of matches that would have tested the most determined of marathon runners, Nick ‘The Slaternater’ Slater has fought his way to the top of the tree.  His tried and tested exercise regime of pulling pints at the beer festival seems to have paid off.  Notable scalps have included the 2016/17 Ladder Champion, Steve James.  The current top 10 is listed below.

1 Nick Slater
2 Tim Whalley
3 Ed Stockley
4 Les Farrell
5 Bryan Elliott
6 Jacky Denning
7 Steve Brookfield
8 Danny Jones
9 John Leadbetter
10 Peter Ashcroft

Great Chairman’s Cup

The drizzle just started as the first bowls were being bowled and steadily increased in the early stages on the comp but this didn’t deter the 18 hardy bowlers. The 9 pairs were divided into 2 groups for a round robin.

Group A saw Angie Barklem and Nick Slater win all their games to get through to the final, although they had a close game against Eric Barklem and newcomer Mark Gibbs winning 9-8 ( Mark had to play with 4 woods in that game as the heavier rain was not helping Eric’s bad cold).

Group B saw John Leadbetter and Ian Gill just sneak through with 3 wins and a draw – they drew their first game against Dave Roper and Brian Green 6-6 and then narrowly beat heir main rivals, Steve James and Dave Hulse, 7-6.

Although the weather had cleared up by this stage, it was straight to the final. Unfortunately Angie and Nick could not reproduce their earlier form and some excellent leading from John meant a 9-3 win for him and Ian.

Steve James our Chairman, who had prepared some lovely sandwiches for the occasion, presented the trophy.

Chairman’s Cup

The Chairman’s Cup will be held this coming Sunday (21st October).  Entry will be £2 per person, with pairs drawn out of the hat.  Exceptions will be made where parents/relatives want to play with children or if you want to bring a beginner as a partner.  Please arrive by 12 noon and we will aim to start as soon as possible after we have made the draw.  It will be round robin with final details depending upon numbers.  Last year the comp was won by Dave Ball and Mike Fagan, with Peter Ashcroft and Kevin Wilcox as runners-up.

Fantastic Charity Event

C78AA01E-FAA5-49DF-9217-13799C2EA93E

The Charity Pairs Competition held today was a great success with 42 people of all ages taking part.  In total £470 was raised on the day which will rise to £970 for Queenscourt Hospice, as Barclays will match the amount pound for pound.  Many thanks should go to Octogon Wealth Management of Burscough who sponsored the event; the Co-op in Aughton who provided the tea and coffee; Iceland in Ormskirk who provided the biscuits; and finally to all those who brought along raffle prizes. One of the biggest thank you’s should go to Eric Barklem for planning the event and for organising it on the day.

The day started with heavy drizzle but it wasn’t too long before the rain cleared and there was a fantastic day’s bowling.

The day culminated in a final between Steve (Uncle) Jones & Andrew Arnold against Ian Gill & Mark Woods. After a tense final end with Ian & Mark lying game, Steve kept his cool and delivered a matchwinning bowl to take the title.

And the winner is…Ormskirk Bowling Club

We have a very proud Chairman and he has written this piece setting out the Club’s successes over the last few weeks……
It has been a remarkable few weeks for OBC.  A number of our teams have had very successful league campaigns.  We finished runners up in Ormskirk Premier League with Ian Gill winning the league averages and a total of 6 of our players finishing in the top 20. Congratulations to Ian on his achievement of losing only one game out of 18 played. Ormskirk Castle secured promotion from Division 1 and are now back in the top league, where they belong, with 4 bowlers finishing in the top 20.
Ormskirk Castle also secured runners-up spot in Division 2 of the Aughton District League and also secured promotion, with Peter Bailey completing the perfect season with 12 unbeaten matches to win the averages. Congratulations to both Ormskirk Castle teams.
Dave Ball also led our Maghull League team to runner up spoilt in the 4th Division and secured promotion to the 3rd Division for next season (subject to possible league restructure.
However, the success has not ended there! On 11th September Ian Gill and Ian Mayne won the Ormskirk League pairs title. In the last 8 the Ians beat D. Stephenson and D. Scott in the quarter-finals and D. Knowles and D. Doyle in the semi-finals, winning both games to 11. These were impressive results but the best was yet to come with a 21 v 15 winner over Dave Fenney and Tim Hodge, two excellent  bowlers. It was a great result and all at OBC are very proud of their achievements.
However, the silverware trail didn’t end there! Two OBC pairings had played their way through to the Westhead League pairs finals night last Friday – Steve James and Chris Horsfall and Ian Mayne and Mike Fagan. Steve and Chris bowled very well in the quarters and semi and had single figures victories in both. Ian and Mike achieved a remarkable comeback in the quarter final being 18-3 down to Andy Slater and Lol Wells to run out 21-18 winners. Mike Fagan was instrumental in starting the comeback with some inspired leading. Mike and Ian then beat Don Morris and Tim Hodge in the semi to set up an all OBC final. Ian and Mike bowled very well, particularly on corner marks, to take the final to 13 and were worthy winners. Again, all at OBC are proud of the achievements of all four finalists and are delighted that members of our club now hold both of these pairs trophies.
Finally, good luck to all OBC members playing in the Ormskirk and Aughton League singles starting this Tuesday. Surely we couldn’t win that as well could we?
Thanks to everyone for their contributions on the greens this season. It has been our most successful campaign to date. Everyone has enjoyed their bowling and represented the club magnificently. Look out for an announcement shortly about our winter singles bowling ladder and the Chairmen’s cup. The bowling never stops at OBC, especially now we’ve got our lights!

Planning & Great Job Done

Our planning consent for the lighting and shelters etc has now been granted by the Council.  Thanks to Ken Knowles for his work on this.

One of our planning requirements was that we had to paint our container green and thanks to Ted Baker, John Leadbetter, and Ian & Matthew Gill (when he wasn’t having a ‘rest’) this was done tonight.  Thanks to all that helped.
