Horse Gallops to the Top

Let’s look back to the Farmers Club, Ormskirk, early October. Messieurs Gill, James and Horsfall are discussing the forthcoming winter ladder, and the fact that they would be starting at the bottom due to last years efforts. The Horse, fuelled by ale, exclaims that he will be top by Christmas! Gill and James laugh, telling the Horse that he wouldn’t be top by any Christmas as he’d never make a bowler.

Roll forward to December 15th and a crisp sunny winters afternoon. The Horse, on the back of an 8 match winning streak (including a crushing 21-20 comeback victory against Ian), has challenged the Faganator to reach the top of the pile.

Horse has a bad start and loses the toss, but it doesn’t matter as he races to an ELEVEN nil lead leaving Mike stunned. Mike rallies well to a respectable deficit but the damage has been done – the Horse holds on and wins comfortably 21-16.

The Horse is top before Christmas who can knock him off his pedestal?

Winter Ladder Update

Some significant matches have been played in the Winter Ladder this last week.  The ladder has a new number 1 with Mike Fagan taking over from Ed Stockley.  Further down the ladder last year’s winner, Steve James came a cropper for the second time in a week, losing 21-9 to Lol Wells.  Highly fancied and in form Tim Dickinson also was stopped in his tracks by Ted Baker, who played a magnificent game to win 21-6.  The biggest gainer was Chris ‘the Horse’ Horsfall, who kept galloping up the ladder with a fine 21-15 win over Chris Sandison.

Another Thank You

Another big thanks to all those that turned out for our working party today to help cut the hedge in difficult weather conditions – a great job was done.

Presentation Evening Postponed

Regretfully the Presentation Night due to be held on 2nd December will have to be postponed.  We must have picked a bad date as many of the prizewinners couldn’t make it.  We will probably now make it part of our AGM evening in the New Year – a date will be decided in the near future.

Working Party – Sunday Morning

Please could Members spare a small amount of time on Sunday morning to come down and assist with either treating the two pavilions or helping trim some of the hedges and putting the material into the skip (which is due to be taken away soon).  The two pavilions are showing signs of water ingress so need to be treated as soon as possible.
Please bring old clothes and, if you have one, petrol hedge cutters.  An old large paint brush may be handy as well.
As always many hands make light work and any time you can spare would be very much appreciated.  We will start at about 9.30am but please come at any time in the morning if you cannot make it for then.

Membership Secretary

Nigel Whitehurst will be assisting the Club by taking a role as ‘Membership Secretary’.  Nigel will be starting this role immediately and the post will be confirmed at the AGM in the New Year.  He will deal with all new membership forms and keep our membership records up to date.  The website has been altered so that any membership forms from now on will go to Nigel.  Ian Gill will remain as Club Secretary for all other purposes.

Presentation Night

The Club’s first ever Presentation Night will be held on Saturday 2nd December starting at 7.30pm.  There will be trophies galore, possibly a short quiz and the opportunity to chance your arm in a short table bowls competition.  This will be held at the Farmers Club (the Greek looking building just down from the Library in Ormskirk).  A full bar will be available but we are not planning food at the moment.
All our junior members and all your partners and friends will be welcome.  This isn’t going to be a very formal do, just the chance to come down,  socialise and have a bit of fun. More details will be circulated soon but put this in your diary.

Thank you

A big thank you to all the members who came down this morning to assist with slitting the green, tidying up the clubhouse & store and the toilet block, and all other jobs. Chris’ supply of tea, coffee and doughnuts was much appreciated by all those present as well!
