Matthew’s Fundraising Comp

A big thank you to all those that attended Matthew’s Fundraising Competition last Sunday which raised around £180 towards his trip to South Africa.  Shown above are some pictures from the day and the results sheet.  Congratulations to Ian Grady and Danny Finch who won the competition, with Andy Howie and Chris Willan the runners up.

Electric Dreams

Sterling work has been done recently by Brian Heaney and Bert Patterson in getting our new toilet block connected up to our electricity supply.  This is despite Brian being in extreme pain with a bad back, and recently undergoing surgery on it.  This is further to the brilliant job done by both of them in doing the electrics on the clubhouse.  Big thanks to both of them from all at the Club for their efforts.  This is on top of the work by Steve and Jacky Denning on the plumbing. The club could not operate without members lending a hand so please help when you can – the club is only as good as the effort put in by its members who give up their time on a voluntary basis.

The toilet block is now fully operational and can be used by club members when visiting the green.

Winter Ladder Play Offs

The winter ladder league has concluded and seems to have been a great success given the number of games played. The artificial green has opened up year-round bowling and has shown itself adaptable to all sorts of weather. As agreed at the AGM the winter ladder closed on 31st March and we will now move into a ‘Winter League Merit’ play-off amongst the top eight bowlers and a trophy for the victor. We will open a ‘Summer Ladder’ on 1st May and further details will follow in due course.
Winter League Merit
Match 1: Don Morris v Tim Whalley
Match 2: Steve James v Matthew Gill
Match 3: Dave Ball v Peter Ashcroft
Match 4: Chris Horsfall v Ian Gill
These matches are to be played by Friday 21st April.  The first player named is responsible for contacting their opponent.
Finals morning – Sunday 23rd April (Provisionally)
10:30am
Winner of Match 1 v Winner of Match 4
Winner of Match 2 v Winner of Match 3
The final will follow shortly afterwards. Both semis and the final will be 21 up. Could you let Ian Gill know of the results of games played please.

Junior Bowling

The Club will start its junior coaching sessions this Thursday at 6pm.  Beginners are welcome to come along for a taster.  If anyone knows of young people between 8-16 who may be interested then bring them along. This first session will be free.  Thereafter juniors can either pay £20 to become members of the club and get free coaching sessions and also have free use of the green at all times when matches are not on (providing an adult is present), or pay £2 per session for training (£1 for each additional sibling).

Junior League fixtures begin on Saturday 22nd April with a tough away match at the Botanic Bandits.  All fixtures can be found on this site.

Fundraiser on Sunday 9th April

Just a reminder that Matthew Gill, is organising a doubles competition on our new artificial green on the 9th April 2017 (Sunday) to help fundraise for his trip to South Africa. This will involve him volunteering at schools to help coach disadvantaged children life skills and sports! Entry is £4 a person and a raffle + hot food and refreshments will be available on the day! It will start at 11 but practice will begin at 10:30. First round will be a round robin so you are guaranteed more than 1 game. Half the money from entry fees will go on prizemoney for the winners and runners up. There are still some places left.

You can enter with a partner but you can still be paired up with someone if you are still interested but don’t have a partner. Pay on the day!

Mayor’s Cup

In the end a great day was had by all, but the day started with torrential rain and it was touch and go whether we would be able to play. However, bowlers are nothing if not stoical and so the decision was made to play.  After a round robin first round, the clouds started to lift and so did our spirits. New pairs who hadn’t even played on the green before took 3 of the 4 semi final places.

Ian Gill and Ian Mayne beat Keith Robinson 9-0 and Peter Wilson and Syd Stafford beat the form pairing from the early stages, Brian Coleman and Steve McManus, 9-5.

The final was fairly one sided due to Ian Mayne’s excellent leading, and the two Ian’s ran out 11-3 winners. The main purpose of the day was to raise money for the Mayor’s charity though, and a decent sum must have been raised.

Another great job

Thanks to Paul and Mike who did most of the work laying the path to the toilet block this morning. Thanks also to Julie and Linda who donned their rubber gloves and cleaned the pavilion and toilet block. Looking good for our Mayors comp next Saturday. Still a few places left if anyone wants to enter.

Saturday Morning – Help needed

We are going to try and sort out laying a path between our toilet block and the entrance to the green this Saturday morning at 10am.  If anyone fit and able could come and lend a hand, for even a short time, it would be much appreciated.  Bring gloves and a spade.
Anyone less strong could assist with giving the toilet block itself a deep clean ready for the following weekend when we have our Mayor’s Comp. The floor has been painted but all walls/sinks/toilets etc could do with a good clean.  Cleaning materials provided but if anyone would like to bring a cloth or two then any monies expended will be refunded etc
Many thanks if you can come and assist – many hands make light work!!
