Fagan steals the title

Congratulations to Mike Fagan who today won the Club’s Singles Competition, beating Ian Mayne 11-10 in a thrilling final.

There was a good turnout of 26 bowlers who were divided into two groups of thirteen.  The quarter finals saw Dave Hulse beat Martin Roberts and Peter Bailey beat Marg Copeland convincingly.  The other two games were closer though with Winnie Rowland only just being beaten by Ian Mayne (11-9) and Mike Fagan just overcoming Joey Copeland (11-8)

Ian brushed aside Peter in one of the semis, but it was closer in the other where Mike only just overcame Dave 11-9.

The final was nip and tuck throughout and, at 10 across, it all went through to the final end.  After a decent lead by Ian, Mike played a superb second wood right on the block.  Ian fired to kill the end but missed to give Mike the 2019 title.  A big thanks to Eric Barklem who ran the competition.

Ian Mayne 11 Peter Bailey 2

QUARTER FINALS

Roy Ashcroft Comp Winners

A fantastic days play saw Fritz Yarwood & Dave Hulse winning the 2019 Roy Ashcroft Memorial Trophy, overcoming Peter Bailey &  Paul Morley 7-5 in a tense final.

Games were all played over 8 ends – 4 on the carpet and 4 on the grass.  10 pairs entered in total, and were divided into 2 groups.  Group 1 was a close affair with all teams picking up at least one win and produced both the eventual finalists.  Top spot went to Fritz & Dave with 3 wins and a +8 points difference, Peter & Paul just behind with also 3 wins and a +3 points difference.

Group 2 was topped by the only unbeaten pair in the round robin stage – Dave & Andrew Arnold, who won all 4 games with a massive +20 points difference.  They were followed in second place by Steve Denning & John Leadbetter, who won 2 and drew one.  Martin Roberts had to play with 4 bowls due to an odd number of players and thugs did not suit him.  Neither did last years winners (Ian Gill & Dave Roper), both with new partners, make much of an impact..

The semis were a mixed bunch.  One close game saw Fritz & Dave overcome Steve & John 7-6, whilst the other was a little more one sided as the Arnold’s ran out of steam to go down 16-1.

Congratulations to Fritz & Dave on winning the trophy and  £30 prize money, but also a big thanks to all the club members who came along to take part and support the competition.

Fantastic Afternoon

Ther was a brilliant afternoon’s bowling on show at Ormskirk Bowling Club today as Ormskirk West Lancs took on Leeds ‘B’ on the hallowed carpet. The first 4 games saw only Mike Wootten winning, although both ‘The Don’ and Mick Davies came close. The next 4 did well with 3 winners, Tim Hodge being the pick of the crop with a superb 21-5 win, and Jim Gray not far behind winning 21-7.  Three more winners in the final 4 meant Ormskirk easily took the aggregate.

A faultless performance at number 10 from our very own Chairman, Steve James, gave him a 21-6 victory. There was real determination and focus etched onto his face after some pre-match nerves, but no quarter was given to a humbled opponent. Our other debutant in the team, Ian Gill, came through a nervy opening to win 21-17.

The match was played in a competitive but sporting way.  Many thanks should go to all those from our Club who came along and assisted with setting and clearing up, marking, pegging, and for their support to the team.  Also to Don Morris for a humongous buffet, Chris Ellis for organising prior to the event, and to John Clark for his captaincy and leadership of the team.
