Ormskirk Bowling Club

Weather permitting, the club will be holding a further taster session on Thursday evening (25 April) at 7pm. Anyone who wants to have a go at bowling please come along, all equipment provided. All those who attended last week really enjoyed it and intend to come back for a further go.

Our Ormskirk team maintained their grip on the top of the Ormskirk Premier League tonight, with a fine 11-1 win against Our Lady’s from Formby, who did not travel well onto our carpet. It was so nearly a clean sweep until the last match where ‘The Horse’ just fell at the last fence in a narrow defeat to John Stewart under the lights.

The Ormskirk Castle had the opposite result at the Skem Park fortress of the Rebels, who kept an ominous 4 points behind the league leaders. Chris Butler was the only winner.

It was great to see both greens in use, with Hurlston Hall using the grass green as a temporary home whilst sorting out the problems with their own green.

The club held a great taster session on Thursday evening, with 8 beginners turning up and lots of members helping out which was much appreciated.

Everyone seemed to enjoy it on a lovely warm evening. Congratulations to Jane and Beverley who just pipped Kath and Wendy in a tight Pairs game. All who attended commented how enjoyable and relaxing the evening was.

There will be another taster session next Thursday (25th) at 7pm for any further people who couldn’t make it last night. Please bring down some friends and give them a taste of bowling.

Come and try a different sport that is suitable for all the family, young or old, and also have the opportunity to gain new friends and get a bit of gentle exercise.  Ormskirk Bowling Club has been up and running for just over three years and is opening its doors to anyone that would like to come and try crown green bowls on its fantastic new artificial and grass bowling greens.  Simple to learn but a bit more difficult to master, bowls is the ideal sport for all ages that anyone can try.

Free taster sessions are being run on Thursday 18 April and Thursday 25 April starting at 7.00pm – attend one or both sessions and no booking is necessary.  No special equipment is needed – all you need to bring is a pair of trainers to play in.  For those that enjoy it there will be further coaching sessions held.  All ages are welcome.

Whilst young players are welcome at the 7pm sessions, the Club also runs bowling sessions specifically for those aged 7-16 on Thursdays at 6pm and young people are welcome to come and have a go – it is free for the first session.

If any members have friends or family who may want to give it a go please bring them along.   Any help from members would be welcomed.

Junior bowling will return to Ormskirk Bowling Club on Thursday 18th April.  The session will start at 6pm and last until 7pm.  Anyone who knows any potential young players aged 7-16 please bring them along and give them a taste of crown green bowling.  All equipment provided and no experience is necessary.

A good start for both our teams in the Ormskirk Premier Division sees them both topping the table after two games. Let’s hope that we can keep it up!

Please note that the electricity meter is being replaced between 12 noon and 4pm on Wednesday 24th April so there will be times when the electricity will not be working.

There were some excellent games in this morning’s Winter Ladder finals. Kevin Wilcox couldn’t make it so Martin Roberts took his place. The quarter finals all went with ladder positions apart from Ian Gill’s and Nick Slater’s match. John Leadbetter and Martin Roberts both put up valiant efforts against Chris Horsfall and Mike Fagan, and Ted Baker put up a great performance against Steve James.

Into the semi finals and there were a couple of upsets. No 1 on the Ladder, Mike Fagan, crashed out 21-17 against Ian Gill and Chris Horsfall took out the bookies favourite, Steve James, 21-14, in perhaps the shock of the day.

On to the final and it was anyone’s game. Ian went into a healthy lead but the Horse, suffering with a whimpering sniffle, pulled it back to 16-17. Ian then took control and, despite finishing only 5th in the Ladder, rose to the occasion once more and retained his title 21-16.

A delighted Ian being presented the trophy by Chairman Steve James, for the second year running. Chris Horsfall was a worthy runner-up.

Last night’s opening game between Ormskirk and Ormskirk Castle in the Ormskirk Premier League on the grass was a close affair. On a bitterly cold night, in which players had to brave a hailstorm, Ormskirk Castle had 6 winners to Ormskirk’s 4, but Ormskirk took the aggregate to take the away points for a 7-6 win. With the Rebels crashing at the Stanley with just 3 winners this was a good night for both teams. Great credit to Eric for getting the green in the best shape it has ever been so far.
